چکیده

This paper reports initial research on supporting Visually Mediated Interaction (VMI) by developing generic expression models and person-specific and generic gesture models for the control of active cameras. We investigate the recognition of both head pose and expression using simple generalisation of trained generic models using Radial Basis Function (RBF) networks. Then we go on to describe a time-delay variant (TDRBF) of the network and evaluate its performance on recognising simple pointing and waving hand gestures in image sequences. Experimental results are presented that show that high levels of performance in gesture recognition can be obtained using these techniques, both for particular individuals and across a set of individuals. Characteristic visual evidence can be automatically selected and used even to recognise individuals from their gestures, depending on the task demands.

The Impact of Multimodal Channels on Teaching Idiomatic Expressions to Intermediate EFL Learners with Regard to Their Attitudes

This study was to explore facilitative function of using multimodal channels over single channel presentation and comprehension of idiomatic expressions to Iranian EFL intermediate proficiency learners. Out of a pool of 90, sixty intermediate participants were homogenized by a QPT test, using a quasi-experimental design. They were randomly assigned to three equal groups: WhatsApp-, SMS- and Cla...

Active Vision Techniques for Visually Mediated Interaction

In this paper we introduce adaptive vision techniques used, for example, in video-conferencing applications. Radial Basis Function (RBF) networks have been trained for gesture-based communication with colour/motion cues to direct face detection and capture ‘attentional frames’. These focus the processing for Visually Mediated Interaction via an appearance-based approach with Gabor filter coeffi...

The Effect of Visually-Mediated Collocations on the Elementary EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Learning

When vocabulary teaching is taken into account in EFL classes in our Iranian state primary schools, teachers generally prefer to use classical techniques. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of visually-mediated collocations on the elementary EFL learners’ vocabulary learning. In order to conduct this study, 60 students from two classrooms in an elementary class, participate...

During the past Decade, Computer Vision Research Has Focused on Constructing beyond Nouns and Verbs

During the past decade, computer vision research has focused on constructing image based appearance models of objects and action classes using large databases of examples (positive and negative) and machine learning to construct models. Visual inference however involves not only detecting and recognizing objects and actions but also extracting rich relationships between objects and actions to f...
